An artificial meniscus is a manufactured device that is slipped into the gap where a knee meniscus has previously been removed.

Standalone - or part of an arthroplasty

Such engineered devices have been tried that are standalone and the metal ones have not enjoyed great success, although experimentors are trying plastic ones that have a certain amount of 'give'. Knee replacements, of course, usually have a plastic component that replaces the meniscus.

Synonyms:
synthetic meniscus
