Icing the knee using a Cryocuff.
RICE is easy to remember
RICE is easy to remember:
- R - REST the knee, and cut back on activities, using walking aids where appropriate.
- I - ICE the joint intermittently, using a bag of ice or frozen peas wrapped in a towel, or use a professional icing machine like a Cryocuff.
- C - COMPRESS the joint with a firm bandage to reduce swelling.
- E - ELEVATE the knee when you are at rest.
What does icing the knee achieve?
Intermittent cold will cause local blood vessels to contract and less fluid will escape into the tissues. It also dampens the inflammatory process.
