Varus refers to a limb alignment where the knees bow outwards.

varus deformity
The condition may also be known as a varus deformity.

Usually a small amount of varus causes no problems, and patients may only be concerned for cosmetic reasons. Excessive varus, however, puts abnormal stress on the one side of the joint, and surgery may be indicated (osteotomy) to correct the alignment.
