Cool doctors in Australia?

I wonder if anybody knows of any innovative sharp doctors in australia, willing to try new, non-invasive techniques rather than just go straight to slash and burn techinques?
I'm 42 and have medial compartment OA, I'd like to explore visco supplementation, or someone willing to try cartilage replcement, or stem cells therapy, or anything that means they are not going to start sawing up my bones.
Any reccommendations on who is the best knee guy in Oz?
Should I be looking overseas?

There ARE some great docs in Oz. The best way of finding them is to ask around in your state, and some Web research certainly never goes astray. You may still find that you have to visit a few first though, in order to find one you feel comfortable with. You could also email some of them to find out their areas of expertise. What state are you in? I'm in SA. You also need to be upfront with what you are looking for when you see an OS. If they are unable to help you then ask for some names of who they know who may be of help. I found my OS from asking around - all sorts of people have info, from work mates to friends and family. Thanks very much for the info. I live in Sydney. I'm currenlty doing PT and he says to see how we go and then maybe see a surgeon. I'd like to find a few candidates though and maybe get a reassessment of my knees - its been four years since I was first diagnosed/Xrayed/MRI'd.
I guess I'm looking for a miracle worker actually

There definitely are.

I would be going to see a good sports physician as a good first step. Some good sports physicians in Sydney are John Orchard & Nathan Gibbs. The problem with surgeons is they only know how to operate apart from recommending physio.

In Melbourne my OS is in the forefront of the latest techniques and treatment. My sports physician is also up with the latest treatments.

Hi Dennis,

I would try a good sports physician first. John Orchard is meant to be good with patella tendon type issues.

We are very luck in Australia as we are in the forefront of sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery.

We still seem to be very far behind when it comes to IAGH AND stem cells (not on Medicare).

How did any of you go re the rHGH? Will John Orchard consider IAGH???

Perhaps not relevant to your situation but if you're in Sydney and looking for physio, I can't recommend Brad McIntosh at Sydney Physio Solutions highly enough. He specialises in knees and has shepherded me through my various knee issues, including rehabing from a PFJR. I've had a really good outcome from that and he deserves a significant part of the credit.
