Wyn's Left TKR,HELP WITH Tendinopathy & Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Post by Garnet »

Hi everyone,

Thought I would start a new diary, after my Left TKR I have or probably after the osteotomy I developed Iliotibial Band Syndrome which my kind Pain Specialist finally agreed and no one else seem to point it out or listened. He is giving me another stronger injection in the band next week and I go into day hospital.

I have not been able to weight bear on my left leg for some time without aid since the TKR, and I am on a list of medications that should take away the pain and they are not working. Again while my OS is away the Pain Dr decided before I go for my second bone scan that the OS requested to see if the prosthesis has moved again, he asked for a doppler ultrasound to see if I have neovascularization of the supra and infra patella tendons. Which I asked my OS to do and he would not scan the tendons. Well guess what after all this time, its the patella tendons. Both are degenerated, the blood flow is too fast and nerves are where they shouldn't be, they said no wonder I am in pain. I have read if that is it and nothing else is complicating it I can have a course of injections to stop the blood flow and kill off the nerves and hopefully strengthen the tendon. The thing is the radiologists that all came in looking at me, were concerned and asked what is going to do with you. Guess I will find out next week. Hope it is not surgery.

I am now on Dibenyline, Osteo SR Panadol, Durogesic 50, Cymbalta 90, Epilim, Topamax.

I have one good news. I have lost 7kg, Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Originally 96kg , I just have another 20kg to lose would be good. I have lost a double roll on the tummy, and 7cm around the waist.

P.S MOST OF ALL ANYONE THAT HAS TENDINOPATHY, NEOVASCULARIZATION. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH

Take care everyone , hugs Wyn

Hello Wyn....
I am sorry you are having to deal with yet another ordeal concerning this knee. But, on a brighter note, I am so glad that someone has finally listened to you and has seemingly found the problem. Now, hopefully they can get it situated and get you some relief. Thats definitely something positive to look at.

And congrats on the weight loss! Thats great!!

Keep me updated. Ill say an extra prayer for you. Hang in there and stay strong.

Many hugs....DONNA

Hi Wyn,
good to hear from you again. I'm glad they finally figured out what's causing your pain. Thank goodness your pain management doc got the tendons scanned for you. It makes me angry to think your OS refused to consider that. You could have had treatment long before now and been saved so much pain!

Oh, well, I suppose it doesn't do any good to grumble about what's past. The important thing is that now you can get it fixed. I don't think I had neovascularization, but I did have tendinopathy in my left patellar tendon. With my last surgery, my OS did an open tenotomy, where he scraped away the degenerated bits and cut longitudinal slits in the tendon body. I guess that stimulates healing. It's a simple procedure that leaves a very small scar, but boy, did it take a long time to recover from. It was well over a year before I was able to stand comfortably on the leg for more than a minute or two. My OS did a lateral release at the same time, to correct my patellar tilt, so that may have complicated things a bit. The tenotomy seems to have worked for me, but from what I've read, it has an up and down track record. If you can get relief with the injections and maybe some PT to strengthen the tendons, then I'd definitely go that route.

Good job with the weight loss. It's really impressive considering how difficult it must be for you to do any kind of physical activity.
Hugs!

Hi there,

I have had my iliotibial band injection and soon I will have a a polidocanol injection in the patella tendon on the 19th. My tibia is clunking and I have lots of pain and cant weight bear. The Dr is eliminating pains so we can tell if the prosthesis is loose. In the New Year I have bone scans again.

Thanks Plumb

The injections have made things more pleasant but by the afternoon the pain is still not good and it should be relieved with everything I have had done and am taking. But at least it is more bearable. I have never gotten off the walking stick since my surgery and spent six months on crutches. We are well into our summer here , we have had nice weather. I miss my hydrotherapy this week because of the injection I was not allowed. I just wish I could walk normal and a quick pace feels like I am getting no where.
The good news is I have lost 11kgs, Yeah!

Merry Christmas to everyone, and lots of hugs, Wyn

Hi ,

I hope you are all fine, and dear Donna I hope you are finally on the mend, and wish that you are not to end up in my condition. I will check your post after this.

Sorry I have not been around. I have had off and on computer problems, then my dear 7 year old HP who never gave me trouble , only once died at the end. So here I am with my new one. Just don't know myself. In between that, things are not happy at all. I am thinking of getting the implant. I noticed you had it Donna. Was that the same thing , the spinal stimulator implant. The pain is there for good. I have Neuropathy, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and the pain signals I am getting are telling me I still feel the knee I had cut out, or the pain from having the knee cut out. So no new knee is going to fix this. Even if it is a bit loose. I am seeing the Pain Specialist in April and telling him to trial it. He told me to go away and think about it, and how my quality of life is, and it really sucks, I just can't go on with this degree of pain day and night. He said he is unable to increase any medication due to my epilepsy and is sorry. I understand, as it is I have alot of pain but can be out on a bus fall asleep at the drop of a hat for a sec, wish that meant the pain was managed, but dangerous when I am out.
I will drop by again, I have had three seizures and some petit mal seizures in the last few months so I have increased medication there again. Lucky no falls just leaps and manage to stop somehow, and jerking the arms.
I hope to catch up again soon, take care everybody.
Hugs Wyn

Wyn, got your PM, and responded.

I didnt have the spinal stimulator implant. I never even heard of it till with you. They took my implant out. (my knee replacement) Put in an antibiotic spacer, which will be in there about 8 weeks, then if all is ok and no infection shows, I will get another new knee, this one porcelain and titanium. They did this to cover both the areas of infection and allergy. The femur got cracked when they were taking the old replacement out. Im sorry you were confused. I sent you my name in the PM so you can add me to facebook. If you have anymore questions, let me know. We can talk more via facebook then. Im on there alot.

Hi-

I am new to this site and love being in touch with others in the same place. I had surgery this Tues for a meniscus removal, cyst removal and my patella bone scraped. I have had 4 surgeries in the past on the same knee for Acl and meniscus. I was just wanting to know how long the recovery is for the patella scraping. I have never been in this much pain before and am going crazy. Also, my hip is killing me and I have no idea why. Do you have any ideas of how long this will last and if this is normal? Thanks

Hi everyone,

Sorry I got confused Donna, thats me being not in touch, I will see you in facebook.

Hi PJ welcome, normally a chondroplasty (patella scraping), this should have been done by keyhole, it is usually a six week full recovery and back to work even earlier depending on the work. But the meniscus work not sure. But my friends had that same treatment and they were back at work doing hard labour but it was not good for them six weeks later. Myself I had the patella problem with a dislocation which was bad and resulted in further complications, so you cannot compare me. But my first surgery included what you just had plus a lateral release and the pain was there but not near as bad as my others. Are you elevating your leg, icing for 20 minutes. Maybe you are doing too much. Take care.

Hugs Wyn

Thank you for the help. I have been having pain 24/7 especially night with my hip. This is the same leg that I have had knee surgery on. I can't sleep on my left side hip or else I have sharp pain. It seems to have gotten worse and I just wanted to know if you or anyone has had this problem. I am 31 yrs old and falling apart. Have a great day and thanks again

Hi PJ,

Yes I had a problem with my hip and it is to do with how you are walking and your posture is not right. I had to have two injections in my left hip for bursitis (means the bursa near the hip is inflammed) the Dr said it also my sciatica (back problem) was acting up. At the moment my right hip is giving me a problem and the Dr is watching that, I may need an injection there but it seemed to have calmed down on its on, or the medication I am on is helping the pain. Last time for the left hip I was not on strong pain medication. If you cannot sleep and the pain is really bad go to the Drs I found the injection worked for me, some people it doesn't, but I got relief from it. My OS said to ice it, so maybe you should be doing that. Just for no more than 20 minutes a couple of times a day.

Take care, Wyn
