Patellar tendon has not filled years after recon

Hi Fellows,

I had an ACL recon done around 13 years ago using Patellar graft. The graft has never filled and I can still feel a gap in the middle. Since a couple of months I have started having a bit of burning and slight pain both in the patella and tibia from where the bone was removed. Also the lateral side of the patella that is attached to the later side of the 1/3 tendon has started to deform and protrude upwards.

Questions
a) how common is this for the patellar tendon to not grow back at all?
b) is there something that can be done to regrow the tendon?
c) I am almost 40, is this patellar deformity common after surgery or is there something that needs to be done

Sounds like a discussion to have with a knee surgeon. A scan might be needed, it's possible that another issue such as arthritis is contributing to your pain

Thanks for your reply Vicster.
The appoinment with a specialist awaits at the end of a very long road due to wait times in public system. I have ultra sound next week, unfortunately a GP can not ask for MRI.


Just wanted to get some personal experience.
My friend is a sports doctor and he thought it was very unusual that after so many years the patellar has not re-grown.
