Written by Dr Sheila Strover on March 14, 2025

Hoffa fracture is a type of break in the femur bone (thighbone) the rounded condyle at the lower end, in the coronal plane and extending into the joint space.

A Hoffa fracture can be easily missed with ordinary X-ray views. It is important to bring the broken fragments together surgically and fix them in place with screws.

Type of injury for a Hoffa fracture

This kind of fracture is rare and usually associated with high impact trauma like a motor vehicle accident or a fall from a height.
