LCL is an abbreviation of 'lateral collateral ligament'.

The lateral collateral ligament is also often called the fibular collateral ligament because of its attachment to the fibula.

The lateral collateral ligament and the posterolateral corner

The outer side of the knee towards the rear is anatomically complex, and is referred to as the posterolateral corner, of which the LCL - or lateral collateral ligament - is a part.

Patients with LCL injuries may present with pain, swelling, and tenderness over the lateral knee joint. Knee instability may also be reported....

Surgical intervention may be considered for Grade 3 LCL tears, multiligamentous knee injuries, chronic instability, or failure of conservative management in low-grade injuries
