Osteochondritis

Written by Dr Sheila Strover on March 14, 2025

Osteochondritis is inflammation of the joint cartilage and underlying bone, and is generally known as osteochondritis dissecans.

Clarifying the terminology

Clarification is needed between the terms 'osteochondritis' and the parent term 'osteochondrosis'.

Osteochondrosis is a group of conditions characterized by a loss of blood supply to a bone, leading to the breakdown and regrowth of bone tissue. Osteochondritis dissecans is one type.

Age of onset

Osteochondritis dissecans can occur from childhood through adult life, with the majority of patients presenting in their teenage years. Osteochondral lesions range in severity from being asymptomatic to mild pain or advanced cases having symptoms of joint instability and locking.
