Hip external rotation and abduction are hip exercises that are relevant in knee rehabilitation.

Patient demonstrating hip exercise.
Lie on the side with the head supported and a four inch gap between the legs and feet.
Patient demonstrating hip exercise.
From that position, externally rotate the upper leg. Hold the position for a few seconds and slowly return to the base position.

Gait, core strength and the knee

For good knee rehabilitation attention needs to be paid to the gait and to core strength, that is - good hip range of motion, good hip and glutes strength and good lower back tone.
